Why is the new iPad Pro LiDAR browser feature important?

The new iPad Pro model was recently announced by Apple and its sales began. One of the most remarkable details among the new iPad Pro features was the Pro camera and LiDAR scanner . So, why is the new iPad Pro LiDAR browser feature important?

Regarding iPad Pro features , Apple positions the Pro camera among the priority details. In this context, first of all, to remind the camera details, it is necessary to say that two 12-megapixel wide-angle and 10-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera sensors are located.

The same camera system is used on both the new iPad Pro 11-inch and the new iPad Pro 12.9-inch models. These two new wide-angle iPad Pro camera sensors are accompanied by a new LiDAR scanner sensor .

It is possible to translate LiDAR , Light Detection and Ranging, as Light Exchange and Detection . With this scanner, it becomes possible to determine the distances and depths of the objects in front of the camera more clearly. Thus, a 3D digital map can be prepared.

So much so that LiDAR technology can be used reliably even on NASA’s various planetary scouts. With the iPad Pro 2020 , Apple has brought this technology to the mobile world.

According to the information announced by Apple, this LiDAR scanner customized for iPad can actively perform measurements on light reflections within an area of about 5 meters. In other words, the net distances and depths of objects located at a distance of about 5 meters can be measured with the least error and 3D map can be created.

Apple points out that detections can be made at the photon level and at nano-second speeds. Therefore, it is emphasized that it will not have any negative effect on the speed of the camera.

iPadOS has played an effective role in both hardware and software working together. Thus, it was possible to make the camera and LiDAR technology work together for AR, that is, Augmented Reality technology.

With this new camera set, Augmented Reality applications and games can be used more efficiently. Because iPad Pro can both model very fast and accurate with LiDAR, and the new iPadOS will make this data available for AR.

Increasing surface and depth determinations also increases the capabilities of applications and games. Especially, positioning on and behind certain objects was one of the details emphasized for AR technology.

Indeed, with LiDAR, it is easier to create virtual components behind objects.

In addition to the emergence of new uses, existing AR apps and AR games will be able to be used much faster with the iPad Pro LiDAR browser feature. At this point, it is pointed out that measurement and follow-up applications will become much more efficient.

Apple can take this new step with iPad Pro , on the iPhone side, according to new information. As mentioned earlier, Apple has been investing heavily in the development of Augmented Reality technology since the early years.

Therefore, the LiDAR scanner sensor, which it started to use on the iPad Pro side with the 2021 iPhone models , even if it is not on the 2020 iPhone model , can also start using on the iPhone side.

Taking into account that it will reach a much wider audience with iPhone, AR can reach a much more important position. Of course, Apple will first try to show what iPad technology can do with both its own apps and iPadOS developers.

As a matter of fact, the returns of the users and the industry will be the result of the usage decision on the iPhone side.

This technology, which will be available to developers with the Apple ARKit framework , seems to increase the development of Augmented Reality applications on the mobile side significantly.

Finally, Apple has been working on this issue before iPad and iPhone on the mobile side. LiDAR technology shows itself in the autonomous vehicle system works named Apple Car since 2015. LiDAR scanners have an important place in autonomous vehicles without drivers.

As a matter of fact, Apple has been working on the LiDAR browser for years before using it on the mobile side. Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that Apple has a seriously experienced team in this regard.

This technology, which entered the mobile world with iPad Pro 2020 , will begin to reveal detailed results towards the end of 2020. Thus, how this new step will have an impact on the industry will be more clearly interpreted towards the end of the year.
